Phil has been teaching my son, Philip, the alto saxophone for about a year now. In that time, Philip has made excellent progress from a beginner on the sax to currently beginning work on the Grade 3 Jazz syllabus. Philip looks forward to his lesson each week and really enjoys it.
My son's lessons are well planned and structured and tailored to his needs. Phil's passion and enthusiasm for music shows through and helps to inspire Philip. Phil is very punctual and reliable. He is flexible if lesson times occasionally have to change and he is willing to travel to the pupil's home (within a specified radius) which is a huge bonus for a busy mum!
In Philip's opinion, 'Phil makes lessons fun, you still learn a lot, it is something to look forward to in the day'.
I would not hesitate to recommend Phil as a tutor.

Phil is an inspiring and personable teacher, and extremely proficient in all of the instruments he teaches. I gained a huge amount from our lessons – he gave me confidence on the instrument (saxophone) and helped me to understand and utilise the jazz chord structures I had been struggling with.
His approach was always professional and organised, but delivered in a relaxed and enjoyable manner – it is easy to see why he is so well respected as a teacher of both adults and children.

My son has had alto sax lessons with Phil for 18 months after having had 12 months of lessons through school previously. Phil has been very flexible and recognises that children need to have fun whilst learning to play. My son particularly enjoys composing his own pieces and playing freestyle with Phil as well as learning to play pieces that he recognise like James Bond or Harry Potter Themes. Without this fun approach I think my son would probably have given up but now he really enjoys his lessons and is getting a lot more confident.

Philip you an excellent saxophone teacher. Milan had previously seen the instrument being played a couple of years ago but kept asking for lessons. You came and made the lessons fun and interesting, giving lots of encouragement, my worries have been laid to rest. Now Milan can't wait for his next lesson. He is pleased you don't give much homework and making the lessons fun has enabled him to play the instrument on his own accord.

Phil's skill, vast musical knowledge, experience and professional make him a highly qualified music teacher. I have been having lessons with him in alto saxophone for over two years now. Phil's love for music is contagious and inspires me to want to keep learning. He personalises each and every lesson makes it fun and engaging. Phil is always patient and positive and will tailor each lesson to suit me and my ability to learn. I thoroughly enjoy every lesson and cannot thank him enough for his encouragement and dedication to his music and pupils.

After more years than I care to admit as a self-taught saxophonist I realised some professional help was needed. I found Phil Haywood on the internet and what a find that was! He taught me improved technique and introduced new ideas into my playing including the use of blues scales, improvisation, and themes and responses. At the same time he has been very helpful in the interpretation of the music in my intermediate level course book and is great to play duets with, from various sources. He is an excellent musician embracing many styles and I can't recommend him too highly.
